The field recordings for this album were made during the darkest season, when the day is so short that you spend the most of it in the dark.
The nature is asleep… Only frozen trees in the dark of the night, fast asleep, keep swaying and uttering piercing moans… What are they dreaming about? Is anybody here at all? Or only spirits of the past are swaying the trees…
The musical part of the album is hard to describe… The way it has been done is pure intuition — I used every little detail able to reflect and translate into sound this atmosphere of loneliness, frozen life, and the majestic cycle on hold.
On the way back home after the darkest and most reverent recording session, I found an artifact: a part of the skull of an unknown animal — it certainly looks very picturesque, especially after it was depicted by Anna Kain.
I tried to identify whose skull it was and it turned out to be an ordinary ram — this animal could not come here on its own, they were bred by people just for food, because such harsh conditions didn’t leave much to count on. A rough estimate of the age of the artifact suggests that people used to live here in the middle of this cold northern forest... No electricity, no Internet, only the howl of the wind and the creak of the trees for many miles round. I wonder, did I manage to record the spirit of these people of the past, who heroically survived in such a harsh climate... Perhaps, this is who the groaning trees are dreaming of?
